Overview
i3 is recruiting an ER-2 research pilot to support NASA flight operations from Edwards Air Force Base. The position encompasses specialised high-altitude research flying as well as standards, scheduling, proficiency, records, and operational support across assigned aircraft. It requires an experienced pilot-in-command who can comply with federal and manufacturer direction, maintain demanding currency standards, and deploy for extended scientific missions. Candidates need an appropriate civilian or military flying background, the required medical and security eligibility, and the judgement to operate safely within a technically complex research aviation programme.
Responsibilities
- Conduct NASA research flight operations on the ER-2 and other assigned aircraft.
- Comply with applicable FAA, manufacturer, and programme operating direction.
- Support flight standards, continuation training, and pilot proficiency requirements.
- Coordinate scheduling and maintain required flight and training records.
- Maintain currency for specialised research missions and extended deployments.
Requirements
- Hold a bachelor's degree; engineering, science, or mathematics is preferred.
- Have at least 1,500 PIC hours.
- Hold an FAA commercial certificate with instrument, multi-engine, and single-engine privileges, or equivalent armed-forces pilot and instrument qualifications.
- Hold a United States passport and meet required drug-screening conditions.
- Meet the applicable NASA medical standard.
- Be eligible for a Secret security clearance.
- Be available for deployed and extended-duration missions.
- At least 1,000 hours on the U-2 and currency within five years are preferred.
